International Womans’ Day 2020

This year, Sunday the 8th of March marks International Women’s day. This day means something different to everyone. It may represent our love and care for our mothers, sisters, aunties, grandmothers, daughters and other friends and family who identify as female. Nevertheless, at its core, this day signifies the respect we show to the strong women in our lives.

As this month’s theme is empowerment, it is important to cast our thoughts, just for a moment, to those women who have experienced domestic violence. Domestic violence is no stranger to Australian women as one in six women* have experienced physical and/or sexual violence from a partner since the age of 15. We can actively support and empower women who have experienced domestic violence by spreading the word about the available services here at Women’s Health and Family Services.

We offer free services for women who have experienced or are at risk of domestic violence. These services are provided by the Domestic Violence Advocacy Service (DVAS). Through DVAS, women can access legal advice and support for counselling services, child protection services and applying for a restraining order. As all our staff members are female, rest assured that our services are available in a supportive and safe environment.

In addition, our Heartful Conversations group has interpreters and bilingual services for women from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse backgrounds (CaLD) to help with language barriers when accessing legal advice. These free services are provided by the Multicultural Women’s Advocacy and Support Service (MWAS). Booking an appointment is easy, as women can self-refer or be referred by another service provider. MWAS has many available locations for appointments in Fremantle, Gosnells, Mirrabooka and Northbridge. At our Northbridge base, Heartful Conversations are run on Wednesdays from 11am to 12.20 pm with Carol Kaplanian and Farida in the Bunuru Room Group Room 2.

This Women’s Day, look out for the women around you who may be at risk or suffer from domestic violence by empowering them to access support. Empower her today.

Please note that these dates and times for our services described above apply to term 1 2020 from 3rd of February to 9th of April 2020.
