At Luma, we’re privileged to support women from all walks of life. As the financial year ends, we reflect on the journeys we’ve witnessed. Here are four stories from the 5,000+ women we walk beside to support annually. This is Sarah's story.
Sarah spent years making herself smaller – quieting her voice, hiding her quirks, and pushing down the parts of herself that felt too much. After a while, she no longer recognised the person she saw in the mirror. The cycle of her eating disorder pulled her back in again and again, each relapse bringing a fresh wave of fear and shame that left her feeling trapped and alone.
Reaching out for help felt terrifying. Her heart pounded as she took that first step, bracing herself for judgment or misunderstanding. Instead, she was met with open arms. For the first time, Sarah found herself surrounded by people in Luma’s Body Esteem Program who saw her for who she was – people who understood her habits, her humour, her struggles. She thought, with a quiet sense of relief, “I’ve found my people.”
Peer workers listened without judgment, gently reminding Sarah that relapse is part of the journey, not the end of it. They told her that healing doesn’t follow a straight line, and that it was okay to take things at her own pace. For the first time, treatment didn’t feel like a checklist or a race – just a safe space to take what she needed, when she needed it.
Slowly, Sarah began to imagine a life that wasn’t defined by her eating disorder – a life where her energy went into living, not just surviving. As she connected with others on similar paths, the heavy cloak of guilt and shame started to lift. She realised she wasn’t alone, and that healing could look different than she’d ever imagined. Now, Sarah can look toward the future without her eating disorder shadowing every step.
Her story is still unfolding as she moves, day by day, toward a healthier, fuller life. With your support, we can continue to help more women like Sarah find hope, connection, and a new way forward.
