Aboriginal-led support groups and health services.
For Aboriginal women and communities, good health is about physical, social, emotional, cultural and spiritual wellbeing.
Our Aboriginal Women’s Service (AWS) is centred around community and connection. We offer one-on-one counselling sessions and a weekly group: Yorgas Own Time.
All groups and sessions are run by Aboriginal women, for Aboriginal women. Our team addresses the common health conditions that Aboriginal communities face and and Sorry Business discussions in a yarning circle: the grief and loss of our shared history, and much more. We can also connect you with other health services, including those at Luma.
We welcome self-referrals, as well as referrals from other health professionals.
Our support options include:
Yorgas Own Time
(Yorga=woman)
Yorgas Own Time is a group for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women to take some time for themselves and connect with other women over a cuppa and yarn, alongside arts and crafts. We often have guest speakers to discuss relevant topics and offer guidance to improve health.
This group is offered weekly in four locations: Balga, Belmont, Joondalup and Midland. Please confirm time, location and dates with our AWS team, or check the links to our flyers below.
Counselling Sessions
We offer one-on-one counselling sessions for any Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander woman over the age of 18. The sessions are confidential and can be in person in Northbridge and Joondalup over the phone.
Long-term outreach support for Aboriginal mothers
In our Nurturing Families Program we are currently offering long-term outreach and in-home support for Aboriginal women who are pregnant or have children up to 12 years old.
We work with mothers who are struggling with mental health or drug/alcohol use, and feel like they are not well connected to other services. We focus on nurturing healthy and safe families, emotional, practical, or spiritual goals and building support networks for greater connection to Community.
